World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2 February every year. This was established by the International Union of Wetlands (WIUN) in March 1996. The theme for 2023 is “Wetland Restoration”
Wetlands have a strong function of regulating groundwater, which can effectively store water and resist flood peaks; It can purify sewage, regulate regional microclimate, and is known as “green reservoir” or “biological storage reservoir”; Wetlands are also important habitats for aquatic animals, amphibians, birds and other wildlife, providing a steady stream of renewable resources for humans. Wetlands, together with forests and oceans, are known as the world’s three major ecosystems, which nurture and enrich global biodiversity, and are likened to the “kidney of the earth”.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2 February every year. This was established by the International Union of Wetlands (WIUN) in March 1996. Since 1997, countries around the world have held different forms of activities on this day to promote the protection of natural resources and ecological environment. On February 2, 1971, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (hereinafter referred to as the Convention on Wetlands), an eight-year-old convention for the conservation and rational use of global wetlands, was signed in Ramsar, Iran. To commemorate this feat and raise public awareness of wetlands, the 19th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on Wetlands in October 1996 decided to designate 2 February as World Wetlands Day from 1997 onwards and to establish a different theme each year. Using the day, government agencies organize and citizens to take various activities to raise public awareness of the value and benefits of wetlands in order to better protect wetland.
Wetlands are an important field of environmental protection and play an important role in maintaining water sources, resisting floods, controlling pollution, regulating climate and maintaining biodiversity. However, due to the reclamation of wetlands or the change of use, the ecological environment has been severely damaged. For example, it will cause intensified floods, obvious drought trends, and sharp reductions in biodiversity.
China’s natural wetlands account for 3.77% of the country’s land area, far lower than the world average, and have long been threatened by rapid population expansion and rapid economic development. 96% of China’s available freshwater resources are preserved in various wetlands.
China acceded to the Ramsar Convention in 1992. Over the years, through unremitting efforts, the protected area of wetlands nationwide has increased significantly, and a national wetland protection system with 41 wetlands of international importance, more than 550 wetland nature reserves and more than 400 wetland parks as the main body has been basically formed.
